Waste reduction in Bedfordshire

The country is now committed to reducing the amount of waste and the government have set targets for waste reduction. A new plan for cutting waste was published back in 2007 that aimed for at least 40 percent of household waste to be recycled or composted by 2010, this rose to 50 percent by 2020.

The local authorities who are responsible for waste disposal and the government has introduced legislative targets for local authorities. Statistics for 2008-9 show that the total amount of municipal waste is decreasing with an increase in the proportion of municipal waste being recycled or composted, increasing to 37.6% in 2008-09, this is up by 3% on 2007-08.

It has been estimated that at least half of the contents of our wheely bins could potentially be recycled. In addition, we could compost the 20% of vegetable peelings and other organic waste that we currently throw away. Despite this ability to recycle or compost around 60% – 70% of our waste, we are only recycling or composting a mere 12%. A total of 80% of municipal waste is still being sent to landfill sites and 8% is incinerated to produce energy.

Others campaign to put more emphasis on preventing waste from the start, rather than just recycling. It is argued that developing and promoting a wide range of waste avoiding goods and services such as composting, refills, repair shops, reduced packaging and leasing schemes is far better than just recycling or composting alone.

Recycling is just one aspect of waste reduction. There are other steps which can be taken. We should only recycle things if we are certain they cannot be repaired or reused. In short, upcycle instead of recycle!

What should we do with our waste in Bedfordshire?

A list of five 'R' priorities to live by if you are serious about the impact waste has on our environment have been developed. These are Refuse, Reduce, Refill, Reuse and Repair.

Refuse:

Try to avoid disposable products that have been designed to be thrown away after one use.
Over packaged goods are to be avoided, opt for less packaging or loose produce.
Avoid buying products that you could do without.

Reduce waste:

Buy products that are well made and last for much longer. Think quality, they may cost a little more, but if they last much longer it will be better for your pocket and the environment.
Reduce the amount you use of a concentrated product. They give you more active ingredient, so ensure you do not use too much by following the instructions.

Refill containers:

There are far more than coffee refill packs available today. For many products refill packs can be bought, these are often cheaper and use much less packaging.

Reuse:

Envelopes can be reused with a reuse label or can be used as scrap paper. As long as no ink is evident, many shred waste paper for small animal bedding.
Plastic carrier bags can be reused several times as shopping bags. They can also be used to carry items to be reused or recycled, and can be used as bin liners in pedal bins.
Thing of charity shops instead of throwing away old clothes, childrens toys and household products. Hospitals, doctors and dentist waiting rooms are often grateful for books.

Repair old products if possible:
